How to get the most from your sessions
Remember your sessions are an investment in yourself, for your well-being and your future life and happiness. Here are some tips on how to get the very best from your sessions.
- You may find it helpful to choose a special note book or file where you can put notes from the sessions, jot down and any thoughts or feelings / issues that you would like to discuss / or anything that seems important between sessions. Bear in mind privacy & safety of what you write.
- It can be helpful to allow an extra 10 minutes or so of personal time immediately after your session to jot down any notes and/or any immediate thoughts or ideas that came out of the session whilst it is fresh in your mind.
- Where possible allow yourself some extra space every week for quiet time / self care activities. This encourages reflection and allows time for the mind to process what we have been working on. It can be anything from a walk in the park, an early night, a long drive, an unhurried drink in a coffee shop or quiet bar, to long bath, a chat with a friend or a quiet night in. It is often in such quiet moments that people find things slot into place.
- A course of therapy is a very personal journey and you may wish to start and maintain a private journal during this time. There is no particular format needed it can be anything from a few bullet points or words to pages of writing, daily, weekly or occasionally.
- If things are not progressing how you would like, your goals from our work change or you would like a progress review then please let me know. We will usually review every few or so sessions but I would like the opportunity to make sure you get exactly what you want from your sessions.
- Some people prefer to keep their sessions private and some like to tell their partners and friends all about each session. Whether you share and how much you share is up to you, but you should never feel obliged to tell others. It is often deeply private and your loved ones should respect that. Remember that you have that choice even if someone else is paying for your sessions.
